Description: The Italian Greyhound is sometimes referred to as the "IG" is the smallest of the sighthounds. He is very similar to the Greyhound, but he is much smaller and more slender in all proportions. He is lively and full of good spirits and wants to please, craves affection and returns it gladly. He adapts well to indoor living. Prone to chills he should be kept in a draft-free environment and given a warm bed to snuggle in. The IG is not a noisy dog, gets along will with other pets and is a clean, odorless dog. He must be handled very gently and should not be placed in a noisy household.

Height: 13-15 inches.

Weight: 8 lbs.

Colors: Solid black, blue, cream, fawn, red or white or any of these colors with broken white.

Coat: Short, fine and glossy.

Temperament: Quiet, affectionate. Okay with children if they are mature. Good with other dogs, sometimes cats. Hunting dog and family pet. Good watch-dog. Poor guard-dog.

Care and Exercise: Easy to groom. He requires is a rub down with a soft cloth or chemise. Bathe only when necessary, but take care that he is thoroughly dry and warm afterwards. Free play and regular walks.

Activity: Indoors - High, Outdoors - Very High

Living Environment: Indoors, city or country, apartment or house, needs daily exercise and attention. The owner of an Italian Greyhound should be an active, patient leader who desires a high-energy , busy, affectionate toy dog.

Health Issues: Prone to broken legs, slipped kneecaps, and hereditary eye problems.

Life Span: 14-16 Years

History: One of the first breeds in ancient antiquity to be bred exclusively as a companion. The breed is also the smallest of the sight hounds. Italian Greyhounds were popular pets of the Egyptians, Greeks and Roman aristocrats. Whatever his original purpose he has been bred for the past few centuries as purely a pet.
